Bridge monitoring and security: SINELEC speaks at symposium at la Sapienza University of Rome

Sinelec spoke at the Kistler Structural Health Monitoring Symposium, which is now in its third year and has been confirmed as one of the main events for civil works monitoring professionals. Sinelec, as the technological arm of the ASTM Group, the world’s second largest operator of highway networks under concession and a global player in the design and construction of major infrastructure works, described the increasingly strategic role that the use of dynamic weighing systems is playing on infrastructure monitoring.

Michael Bjorn Miletto, Head of Area Safety at Sinelec, gave an important contribution on the use of dynamic weighbridges (Weigh-in-Motion, WIM), which allow weighing of moving vehicles without any slowdown or disruption of traffic, focusing on the evolution of road infrastructure and heavy traffic. The negative externalities caused by overloaded heavy vehicles are, in fact, multiple: in addition to reducing the life expectancy of road infrastructure, causing greater degradation to pavement and structures such as bridges or viaducts, they impact safety and environmental pollution.

The Kistler Structural Health Monitoring Symposium was held at the Architecture Department of La Sapienza University of Rome, in the Villa Borghese setting. The event welcomes specialists from dealerships, regulators, and academia to discuss what has been achieved in recent years, current projects, and prospects for the industry. The collaborative atmosphere, which has characterized the initiative since its inception, provided a valuable opportunity for researchers and practitioners to share insight.
